"Poor experience of acute assessment unit, Gate 12 Pinderfields"

About: Pinderfields General Hospital / General medicine

(as a relative),

My husband was in the care of gate 12 AAU at Pinderfields. The care was sublime at best. The nursing staff appear to despise their jobs (inc HCA). Everything is too much trouble for this unit which bizarrely (and seemingly contrary to the name!) lacks assessment.

3 days into admission and my husband had been seen by 3 different doctors. 2 of which ignored everything he was telling them and came up with odd diagnosis such as 'food poisoning'.

3rd time lucky, my husband was seen by a great Dr and his junior. He said he wanted blood tests, urine samples and stool samples. Unfortunately what was said in the room was lost in transit outside of the room. No sample kits came and it took another day for me to turn up and them not being provided for me to ask the nursing staff. The nursing staff immediately get defensive when questions are asked. It is rather worrying.

My husband had a high temp that wasn't going down. The HCA did his obs and said she would return 30 mins later to redo the temp. 2 hrs later she showed up and asks my husband if he feels hot. He says no (he has a fever) so she turns around and doesn't do the temp! Throughout the obs, the resps were never counted. It was as though she didn't want my husband to score high on the NEWS/MEWS as that would require more frequent observations. (Which she clearly couldn't be bothered to do).

My husband didn't have wrist bands on so they were not following the 5 rights when administrating his medication.

A Dr came to take blood and noticed he didn't have wrist bands so left without blood!

None of the nurses I saw introduced themselves (#hellomynameis), the nurses were often rude, confrontational and lacked compassion.

My husband did not eat for 3 days and when I asked the staff nurse about this she said it was "the least of her concerns". My husband was never weighed. There was no MUST care plan in place or food chart.

My husbands side room was directly next to the nurses station.

The Dr asked us to provide a fan to help cool him down. Again this was not told to the nurses who came in and took the fan away. Claiming "infection control" my husband is in a side room, he isn't going to infect anyone and when asked about the theory of fans spreading infection, the nurse couldn't provide any evidence to back this up. So much for evidence based practice.
