"My stay in Hospital"

About: Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency Victoria Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

In early Jan 2016, I was on my way to my work at the hospital to commence my 12.5 hour night shift as a nurse in the VHK hospital when I became unwell. I was taken to A&E where I was triaged and placed in the majors bay. This is where I remained until medical staff were able to assess me. By this point I was severely dehydrated and shut down, it took 5 attempts to get a cannula in me for fluids and IV antiemtics.

I was then seen by surgeons who admitted me to Admissions 2 where I spent the night. All staff in this ward were fantastic! I then went for my operation on the Sunday at 4pm and was told I was being admitted to Ward 52 post op.

When I came back from theatre for the first hour I was concious and speaking to my family. 1 hour after returning from theatre I took what was thought to be an anaphalaxis reaction. This meant the emergency buzzer was set off and the Crash Team were called. Thankfully I was ok and managed to come round. However after this I was left for 2 hours and 30 minutes with no monitoring on me or any checks being done. As a staff Nurse I find this absolutely SHOCKING as anything could have happened to me in that 2 hours and nobody would have been any wiser. I understand sometimes wards can be busy but this is no excuse after an emergency call.

Dear Velm

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your recent experience in Victoria Hospital, this must have been a very frightening time for you.

I was pleased to hear that the staff in Admissions Unit 2 were fantastic and will make sure your post is shared so they see your feedback.

In terms of the concerns you raise about Ward 52, again I will share your post with the relevent staff. It would however be helpful to speak to you directly to obtain some more specific information so that the specifics can be looked at. If you would be willing to discuss this please contact me directly on 01592 648069.

I do hope you are now making a good recovery.
