"Cardiology follow up appointment"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Cardiology / Coronary Care Unit

(as the patient),

I developed a heart rhythm issue a couple of years ago. In these two years it seems to have taken a very long time to get tests done, wait for results, wait for next appointment etc, probably nothing unusual in an overstretched system.

Staff (nurses and technical staff) have been very friendly and helpful. Last tests were April 2015 and got results in December. Was told in April I'd be seen in Cardiology again but no news yet. This is the main frustration, not knowing where you are in the system, meanwhile struggling to carry on with normal life with no one to ask for advice, discuss medication options, symptoms, what I should be doing etc.

As the patient I want to be involved in my healthcare but this is difficult without anyone providing information! Months go by between appointments and I can't help but feel this is not a good situation for the patient, relatives or the healthcare system. My GP is great but they are in same position as me, waiting to hear from Cardiology.

Would be very helpful to have someone to contact, either myself or my GP, about appointments and also for advice on medication, symptoms etc, this could even be by phone and might free up some valuable clinic appointment times, some things could surely be quite quickly advised on if there was someone to contact. This would also perhaps allow patient to feel some level of control over their healthcare plans.

Dear patient

Many thanks for taking the time to post your feedback. We are glad that you found our staff to be friendly and helpful.

Waiting for test results is undeniably a source of frustration and sometimes fear for patients. I think your suggestion of someone to contact is a good one. In fact I would have thought that as you have been in the system for some time that you would have a designated Consultant and contact details of a secretary. Clearly this is not the case for you.

I will make sure that the service sees your post and I will ask them to provide a response. In the meantime if you would like to get in touch with me directly I can try to find out what exactly is happening with your case.

Of course we understand if you choose not to get in touch but it would perhaps help alleviate your concerns if we were able to at least tell you what to expect next in terms of your on-going care.

If you choose not to get in touch we will still be looking for the service to respond to your concerns.

Once again thank you for taking the time to post your feedback and for your valuable suggestion.

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. I needed some time to think about getting back in touch, but now I have decided this would be helpful, could you let me know the best way to contact you? Many thanks in advance.
