"Hospital food and general care"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital (Paisley)

(as a relative),

I looked after a parent while on a long stay in Hospital of over 3 months at Paisley Royal Alexandria, I found the overall experience to be adequate to very good, the consultants seemed to be very qualified and my family member was able to leave the hospital to recover at home. To summarise and keep this simple, I found the Consultants and Doctors to be very good, nursing care fluctuated between very good and poor, I sometimes found tablets on the floor my parent should have taken, someone not always available when needed, a nurse did eventually come, once noticed an intravenous drip not reconnected after being moved, medication was pumped out onto the floor. I commonly found myself asking nurses for things that took up their time, a simple leaflet introducing the ward and how it operates would have saved a lot of this, all the same questions must be asked over and over by new patients and family. A common issue my parent had was with food, sometimes not warm, pretty basic, not particularly healthy, pie and beans, macaroni and cheese, sometimes little option, food is health and it should be a focus for hospitals, staff should only have the option of the same food, cafe and food dispensers full of chocolate and salty sandwiches, we should be looking to change this as a priority.

Response from Lorna Gray, Patient Experience, Public Involvement Project Manager, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

Dear T Glasgow,

It is great to hear that your parent is now recovering at home after such a long time in hospital. Although you have summarised the experience you both had over that time, there is quite a lot here to reflect on, both about the individual care by staff as well as wider operational aspects of the hospital as a whole.

In the first instance, it would be helpful if you were able to give me a little bit more information about your parent’s stay in hospital, particularly what ward they were being treated in and when this was. This would just help me to direct the feedback more specifically. You can do this through Patient Opinion, or directly to me on lorna.gray@ggc.scot.nhs.uk. Whether you choose to get in touch or not, I would like to reassure you that your feedback will be seen by Senior Managers at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and used to help us keep improving the services we provide to our patients and their loved ones.

With best wishes,
