I looked after a parent while on a long stay in Hospital of over 3 months at Paisley Royal Alexandria, I found the overall experience to be adequate to very good, the consultants seemed to be very qualified and my family member was able to leave the hospital to recover at home. To summarise and keep this simple, I found the Consultants and Doctors to be very good, nursing care fluctuated between very good and poor, I sometimes found tablets on the floor my parent should have taken, someone not always available when needed, a nurse did eventually come, once noticed an intravenous drip not reconnected after being moved, medication was pumped out onto the floor. I commonly found myself asking nurses for things that took up their time, a simple leaflet introducing the ward and how it operates would have saved a lot of this, all the same questions must be asked over and over by new patients and family. A common issue my parent had was with food, sometimes not warm, pretty basic, not particularly healthy, pie and beans, macaroni and cheese, sometimes little option, food is health and it should be a focus for hospitals, staff should only have the option of the same food, cafe and food dispensers full of chocolate and salty sandwiches, we should be looking to change this as a priority.
