"wrong advise from ibd nurse put me in LRI..."

About: Leicester General Hospital

Have been a patient with IBD for 15 years under the care of one particular Consultant. In all this time they have seen me just three times! My care has not been managed regularly and only by IBD nurses and gp. Needed help urgently as a flare had started and I am pregnant. Told my nurse who advised to eat more fibre specifically wheetabix and brown bread etc. Told me to get over the counter spasmodic from a chemist even though the chemist would not like to give them to me. Concerned for my baby i questioned if thar was ok, they said well it's not viable til 20 weeks anyway!

I asked to come in hospital outpatients to be seen but they said I'd need to be referred. Said they would send a blood test paper in the post. I was admitted to the Royal 2 days later very ill indeed. They kept me in 9 days. My bloods were abnormal, I was losing blood from ulcers and the meds weren't able to stop it. Through questioning they realised I was eating fibre like I was told to by IBD nurse!

They put me on a low residue diet immediately and I am recovering with steroids and enemas. The consultants at royal (4 of them) all said I am a high risk patient and should have been getting monitored by the consultant regularly. It was clear to me that I have been neglected and if I had been given support when I needed it i probably wouldn't have declined so rapidly. The nurses have become a barrier between patient and consultant at the general. Also how can a nurse prescribe medications without a Dr's consent or without a patient observation? I'm glad I didn't take the meds they told me to or else I could have also ended up with an intestinal blockage. If the nurses can't help properly over the phone it shouldn't exist. If the gp has to refer and it takes 7 weeks what's the point? Next time I'm just going through A&E or the walk in centre they are brilliant.
