About: St John's Hospital / General Psychiatry

(as the patient),

The IPCU Unit at St John's Hospital in Livingston has a board on a wall that is visible to all patients and visitors. It has full names of patients discharged. I don't consider this an adequate level of privacy.

Response from Jeannette Morrison, Head of Patient Experience, NHS Lothian

Dear Bathgateman,

I have had an update from the clinical team that l wanted to share with and have heard that they took action recently to move a board within the staff office in IPCU to another office so that patient sensitive information was not clearly visible to patients or visitors who may stand and look in the staff office window or from the courtyard facing windows. Another board that had key worker groups was amended so that only initials of patients were written on the board. There was a part on that board that had names of patients that had been discharged in small writing. This was not clearly visible from the corridor looking in but would of been visible if a patient was standing within that office or doorway. The information on discharges has now been removed. We have been able to source more office space within the unit and hope to move into that space relatively quickly. Within the new office there will be frosted film coverings on the windows to prevent any visibility in to the office from either the courtyard or the corridor.

Thanks again for bringing this to our attention.

Best wishes

Thanks. There are a good number of conscientious people who work at the IPCU unit and they deserve to be listened to and supported, over this and other issues...
