"Giving birth, pre- and post-natal care at the..."

About: Royal Free Hospital

I had my baby at the Royal Free hospital in November 2014. I was really satisfied with the ante-natal care and attended all the classes provided (breastfeeding, life with a baby, water birth, etc.). Those were helpful, especially for a new mum like me!

Birth went well (baby came naturally, no induction, no drugs) and I felt secure in the delivery room with a midwife and a student midwife (I had agreed to a student midwife being there a long time in advance). The experienced midwife did a great job at avoiding a tear. This resulted in no stitches, and a very fast recovery.

Post-natal care in the ward, unfortunately, was not so good. Staff were very nice and and professional but they are overworked and it shows in the level of care they can provide. I assume that it's the same everywhere due to cuts so I don't blame this particular ward for this. It's a shame...

Because my baby wasn't gaining weight I had to stay in the ward for 6 days in a room with my baby and 3 other new mothers, their babies and their partners and that was not very pleasant... Again, I'm sure they do what they can with the space they have. Had I been able to leave earlier I probably wouldn't have minded.

Overall, I would recommend it because at the end of the day, they took good care of my baby and me and we left healthy and happy.

Thank you very much for your comments, we're really pleased you were satisfied with the antenatal care you received and that the birth of your baby went well. We will pass your full review on to the maternity team at the Royal Free Hospital so that your feedback on the postnatal care can be included when we are planning service provision in the future. Thanks again for getting in touch.
