We went in for our first scan for our first pregnancy at 13weeks. I had all normal first trimester symptoms, I am low risk and no complications. So obviously we were expecting good news. However this was not to be. The pregnancy was non viable, no foetus. The sonographer did not explain anything to us. They simply said you've had a missed miscarriage, which we didn't understand as we didn't know what that meant. And that I had a large ovarian cyst but that wasn't important. The sonographer made an appointment for us to see emergency gynaecology department two weeks later. We were not given any leaflets or a number to call to discuss what this meant, what was happening or what to expect. We have been left over Christmas and New Year with simply no understanding of what is going on and have been waiting to miscarry, although nothing has happened in that area. We have no understanding of what tomorrow's appointment is for or will achieve. Speaking to friends who have been in a similar situation they all received some explanation, information, leaflets, counselling, advice helpline numbers after such a scan. St Marys seem to have no procedure to cover when things go wrong at your first scan. Leaving us in this situation for two weeks is totally immoral. The sonographer was not rushed off their feet, we were seen 15minutes early and were out before our appointment was even due to start and there was no one else waiting to go in after us. The receptionist also questioned us inappropriately when we asked where the emergency gynaecology department was (as sonographer didn't know), saying: "why do you want to go there, are you sure you need to go there"?
We have had two weeks thinking about this and discussing our experience with others. We are totally disgusted with how we were treated and would never recommend St Marys to anyone expecting a baby.
