"My dad left lying in urine soaked bed"

About: York Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

My dad has been in york hospital for 6 mths. He had a stroke 3 yrs ago which has left him unable to walk. He is doubly incontinent, can't do anything for himself so he has to rely on the nurse's to do everything for him.

We went to visit him recently. he said he was cold; I couldn't understand this because the hospital is so warm. I pulled his sheet back and to my horror discovered he was soaked in urine! It was so bad that it had gone through the nappy and the bed sheet and the mattress was soaked. I called a nurse and told her I wasn't happy because this wasn't the first time it had happened. My dad has a sore bottom and I realised why. He was being left in urine and not changed regularly and to me every 4 hrs isn't enough.

A nurse came in to do the job alone. this is a serious breach of safety both to the member of staff and my dad. I ended up helping to change him. The mattress wasn't wiped, the bed sheet was pulled out and a pad was put straight on without washing my dad! I was eager to get him changed and warm because he was complaining.

To cut a long story short they were short staffed. A nurse went home but the staff display board said that were fully staffed - which was clearly untrue. I counted the staff and confirmed this was right. I was told by the staff that they had been told by management not to talk to the families of patients about the staff shortage and about any other problems and they said they were basically gagged by management. I found out the names of these so called managers and left a message and also emailed pals. This is not acceptable!
