"Support staff generally helpful, ..."

About: Darent Valley Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Support staff generally helpful, cleaners, etc. Many nursing staff either to busy or uncaring, some exceptions, however. On many occasions medications were missed for hour or more, home brought medications lost on ward.

Mixed wards is an outrage, women with wounds in personal areas having to use toilet that a man has used and is covered with urine, and you wonder where infections come from. Stop generating statistics and take a proper look round.

What could be improved

Seperate sex wards-Now!!

Anything else?

Continuity of treatment, during treatment over some days, was seen by a number of doctors in same surgical team, each time a different opinion and change to possible treatment. This team system does not provide for a continuity of treatment, causes patient anxiety and confusion, and is a waste of rescourses, a nominated Doctor for each patient with a nominated subordinate is a far better approach both in terms of continuity but also for patient trust.

I’m sorry that your experience of the nursing care and environment were poor. Our hospital is a modern building, and is normally rated very well by patients for cleanliness so I’m sorry that you had a bad experience. If this should ever happen again, do please alert the ward staff who can attend to the matter, or if it is still unresolved, ask to speak to the matron or the domestic supervisor. The wards have single sex bays, so men and women should not have sleep in the same area, except very occasionally in the emergency assessment wards. We are currently working to provide more single sex bathrooms.

Regarding your comments about the surgical team system, I’m sorry that you experienced lack of continuity of care. Now that doctors work fewer hours, they do have a formal handover to ensure continuity of care, so I am sorry that you felt this handover system was not working well for you. I will pass your comments to the surgical team for their information.

Jenny Kay, Director of Nursing.
