(as the patient),

After visiting A&E I was told I was getting admitted and would have to have surgery on my foot. Moved me up to a ward at 4.30am.

In the morning a surgeon came round and told me I could eat, so I did. 30 minutes later a senior surgeon came to tell me there was a surgery slot soon, as long as I had been nil-by-mouth. Which thanks to the first surgeon I hadn't been.

30 hours later, I am still waiting to have the surgery. I wouldn't have a problem with the wait if it weren't for the fact that a) I am perfectly fit and healthy and could have waited at home, and b) I hadn't been told every hour or so that "you'll be in for surgery very soon". Still waiting for surgery as I write this.

Good afternoon,

Whist we are unable to comment directly on your individual experience without specific details, we would like to apologise firstly for your delay in having surgery on your foot and secondly for the miscommunication that you have experienced. Unfortunately the very nature of the trauma speciality can be unpredictable, resulting in theatre lists having to be altered at short notice. This does not however excuse poor communication for which we again apologise. Within the trauma and orthopaedic department we are working hard to ensure that patients move as smoothly and efficiently through our services.

We are very sorry that your faith in our department has been affected, but would reassure you that we will strive to do all we can to provide care and treatment to regain your confidence.
