"Worst Hospital"

About: Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

Several weeks ago my mother was admitted to your A and E department .On that particular visit things seemed to get done but was in the hospital for 8 hours .The nurses and Doctors did take there time but I thought the time we were there didn't warrant the outcome of the visit .LAST Sunday 20th December she was admitted at 5.40 by Northern GP .Why the doctor admitted a 85 year old lady with dementia is beyond me ,especially as she was already on antibiotics and this could of easily waited until morning .I arrived at the hospital to find my mam in a room on her own .A doctor finally came at 10.00 am and examined her and sent her for a x ray ,they took bloods and we waited ,at 11.00am I asked for a bit of breakfast for her and I got her some water,,we continued to wait and then she was moved to another ward , A MALE WARD .This was quickly noticed and then she was moved again ,Our wait continued ,finally at 15.00 hours I was told that another doctor was going to look at her .At 16.00 hours ,she was offered a salad by one of the cleaning staff as I used to work with this person and they kindly offered to get her something to eat .At 16.20 the doctor came to see her wrote her a prescription .At 17.00 hours we were told we could go .Once back at the care home ,the senior raised concern that the medication she had been prescribed was too high ,so that had to be followed up by her own doctor the next day .The medication was too high for a 85 year old lady that hardly eats .My Mam was admitted again last night 27th December .We were told she would be returning back to the care home later on last night ,I went into the care home today to discover that she had only returned today at 9.30 with no discharge note ,therefore carers not sure what doctors had done about her been admitted. This is not acceptable .My mam has dementia and onset of parkinsons .I am totally appalled by what my mam has had to endure while in your care .

I CAN ONLY HOPE THAT I NEVER HAVE TO SET FOOT INSIDE THIS HOSPITAL AGAIN .And that I can refuse to go there with my mam if she needs to go to hospital again .

Dear Lesley

My sincere apologies that it has taken a while for you to receive a response. I do hope that your mother is now comfortable.

I am appalled to hear your account of the care your mother has received. There are things we could have done to make the experience a much better one for you both, and for that I am sorry.

We would like to talk to you about this so that we can look into this further and would greatly appreciate it if you could get in touch with our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0800 032 0202.

Kind regards

Claire Riley, director of communications and corporate affairs
