My mother in law has been in hospital for four weeks. She is in her 90s. She was admitted because she was breathless. She has not been in great health for a good few years - all age related illnesses. The first problem was she was left lying on a trolley four 3 hours in A & E, she was really uncomfortable.
She was then moved to a ward, where things went from bad to worse. Because of her condition she had to be helped in and out of bed etc she then got bed sores that my wife was treating for her before the staff eventually got the message and got another type of mattress. She then got C DIf. But before this she was constantly being sick she was using tissues which we had to bin.
She was moved to a side ward, where they were giving her an antibiotics drip, because she could not swallow. This has been going on for about two weeks. The other day the Doctor asked to speak to us we were told she was not getting any better and that we should be prepared. Then yesterday we find she has been put back into the ward when we asked why every one of the staff gave a different answer.
My main concern is that the staff are not very helpful when you ask questions all you get is "I just started my shift". I told them that the hand care lotion at the ward entrance was empty, I was told that it was someone else's job. It took three days for this to be refilled.
Last night we were told that her MEWS level was 4 and that they were moving her back into a room Asap.
We called down last night and got the most obnoxious member of staff saying this will be done if we get time. Not what you would expect from a professional health care worker when a member of your family is dying.
