"Poor treatment of my auntie"

About: Rotherham Hospital

(as a relative),

My auntie recently passed away in the hospital and in my opinion the treatment she recieved was awful. My auntie was orginally admitted to the hospital in October 2008 after a fall. She also suffered a stroke maybe caused by the shock of the fall. In total she was in hospital nine months spending time on B3,HDU and sitwell wards. She was discharged in July 2009 and was sent to a nursing home. In October 2009 she was admitted to the hospital to have a stent removed from her kidney. She came out after this operation and went back to the nursing home. At the end of November she was admitted to the hospital again this time to A2. Sadly she did not come round and died on earlier this month. She was 69 years old. During her final stay in hospital on A2 family was allowed to visit at whatever time it was open visiting because my auntie was so poorly. She was on a general ward with the curtains pulled round. This I feel was very poor pratice and distressing not just for my auntie's family but also for other patients on the ward.

I myself had to have some treatment earlier this year. I was under the care of Mr Kotcheta and the care i recieved was excellent first class to be honest. I have worked in the past has a volunteer at the hospital but in my opinion since the hospital got foundation status it has gone down hill. I think changes that have made it worse include closure of wards including several wards on A level and the closure of the ward on dermatology and merging with haematology.

Thank you for taking the time to share both of your experiences. Also please accept my condolences for your recent loss.

Regarding the issues raised above, as these seem to be fairly complex, involving a variety of wards and care situations, it is difficult for me to respond to these on this site.

I have passed your comments concerns on to Patient Services at Rotherham Hospital. The staff in the Patient Advice Service would be more than happy to discuss the issues with you, please do not hesitate to contact them at Rotherham Hospital, on 01709 307646.
