"Geriatric Care"

About: Tameside General Hospital

Really concerned about the poor level of care afforded my elderly relative. Nutrition was poorly managed as was medication. Records indicated medicine had been given when it had not.

Doctors made notes about 'new' conditions that had not been properly proven. A Urinary Infection went untreated because I was told the treatment may cause diarrhoea.

Drinks were often left out of reach and required supplements not provided. This caused my relative to suffer dehydration and confusion.

Hygiene was a a quick wipe over. No soap no water, no bath, no shower.

Hands were never cleaned and dental/mouth care was neglected.

Some nurses were very good and kind others had little time for the patient and constantly blamed staff shortages for inadequate care when challenged.

Doctors were never available to meet with and if an appointment was made they invariably then missed the meeting. If I was lucky a junior doctor might meet with me but they didn't know my relative and was just read the notes.

It was clear beds were a higher priority than patient care and my relative was told they were being discharged when they clearly remained unwell. I was told they should go home as they'll only catch an infection if they stay. Beggars the question does this hospital have/practice infection control?

Under no circumstances would I recommend this hospital for elderly care. I am not surprised they have one of the highest mortality rates in the country and I'm concerned that whilst they have been assessed as requiring improvement my own experience leads me to believe they should remain in special measures as they clearly need help improving standards of care.
