"'A more positive way of life'"

About: Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / Intellectual Developmental Disabilities /Learning Disability Services – Community (County)

(as a service user),

The Men's Group at Kirkby has opened doors. If I wasn't on this course I would be drinking at home and in the pub. I wouldn't have had this way of life. I'm more active. I have a belief in myself and others.

Before I came here, all my mates liked to drink and I used to get roped in to join them. I now say no and the group has given me a voice. I only drink at weekends instead of everyday. I've learnt self control and that's the hardest thing of all. I was dependent on alcohol and now I'm not.

The staff in the group are friendly, they ask me about about my week and I'm able to express what I say. I was angry due to losing two friends and I got support from staff in the group. Mindfulness has helped too. If my mental health is not good I can ask for help now.

The group has put things into perspective for me. I would like to do more courses that help such as talking and well being.

It takes the stress off you. It's given me coping strategies and keeps me out of the pub.

Response from Paul Hunt, Occupational Therapy Technical Instructor., Specialist Services Directorate., Intellectual Disabilities Directorate.

Dear Relapse

Thank you for your feedback and honesty, the information you provide helps us to plan and deliver future services. We are pleased to hear you have found the men’s group beneficial and we thank you for all the hard work and support you have provided to others. Paul and I will pass on your feedback to our manages and will do everything we can to keep supporting you now that the group has finished. You should feel very proud of the work you have accomplished and it is clear to me that without your positivity, and that of your fellow members, the group would not have worked so well. I understand you would like to attend similar groups/courses in the future so I shall keep you informed about any groups the Occupational Therapy / Community Learning Disability teams run or hear about. Keep up all the positive work.

Best wishes,
