"A & E department not fit for purpose"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (London)

Having had two previous heart attacks when I got chest pains I presented myself to the A & E department. The reception and triage staff were good but there was no sign of urgency. When I got to see the doctor they were excellent but could go no further until the blood test results came back, and thats where the care stopped. After five hours of waiting we were feeling quite unwell through lack of food and drink. Went to the nurses station but was completely ignored by all the staff that were standing there. We could not sit there any longer not knowing when I would be seen again and when we could eat (diabetic) . I made the decision to go home and suffer any consequences. Excellent Doctor let down by blood test department..

I am sorry to read your comments about your recent visit to the Emergency Department (ED). All of our staff in the ED are trained to carry out their duties with due care and professionalism, and we aim to see and treat all our patients within 4 hours.

I do apologise that this has not been your experience on this occasion. I will be highlighting the points you raised to the whole team at our next meeting so that we can learn from this with the aim of improving the future level of care we provide to our patients. If you would like your concerns investigated further and receive a formal response please contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on 020 8836 4592. Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback.
