"They really are a fantastic team"

About: Heartlands Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was brought into A/E at BHH with DKA (high blood sugars in diabetic patient). He was ferried straight to resus due to his condition and was treated by a number of the team in resus department. Whilst all the staff were fantastic, one particular nurse was brilliant and kept me informed at every stage. What they were doing and a why, At one point there was discussions as to whether he needed to be transferred to ITU, and the staff explained why this would be and that they will bleep the on call ITU doctor to come and assess. Thankfully he didnt need to go to ITU, and after a few hours in resus with all signs heading in the right direction he was then transferred to a ward (remarkably quick).

They really are a fantastic team and are hugely under-rated when all we seem to do is focus on targets and 4 hour waits when actually they are frontline staff dealing with patients. I didn't really care if I had been in the department for 20 hours, the fact they got to work on my son straight away was all that mattered to me. And actually he was seen and transferred under 4 hours so he "ticked" that box!

What makes this story all the more better is I am a member of staff at Heartlands and Heartlands is my nearest A/E, however I never disclosed the fact I was a member of staff, so his swift and speedy treatment was solely down to the dedicated staff and not because I was leapfrogged up the queue.

Dear Tina-F-HEFT

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide your feedback following your son's emergency attendance to the Accident and Emergency Department at Heartlands Hospital recently.

I am so pleased to read that you found the team in the Resuscitation Area attended to your son immediately to stabilise him, it must have been a very worrying time for you as a parent.

I will be thrilled to highlight your feedback to Hilary Clemson, Matron for Accident and Emergency Services, as well as to Dr Ola Erinfolami, Clinical Director for Emergency Services.who will be delighted to communicate your feedback to all of the Resuscitation team.

Thank you once again for taking the time to provide your comments, patient and family feedback is extremely important to us.

I do hope that your son is continuing to recover following his admission to hospital.

With kind regards

Marie Helebert
