"Accident and Emergency 23.11.2015"

About: Lister Hospital

My partner was admitted to A & E last night on the recommendation of his doctor having been taken ill last Thursday and detrition of his health. Having arrived at A & E at 7pm he was initially checked by triage and then want on to have blood test but returned to the

A & E waiting area, he was a very visibly sick man and due to pain and discomfort he needed to lay down there was not an area for this to happen he was in and out of a state of consciousness despite this he waited patiently.

At 1 am this morning I contacted A & E for an update on his condition and was advised we are very busy and have ambulance admissions that have been waiting for two hours when I asked why was my partner still waiting after six hours I was advised we are waiting for a surgeon who is in the operating theatre and was advised to speak to A & E front line staff and was given a telephone number which was clearly an internal number which requested a pin number, yet again I had to ring back and managed to speak to the Sister in charge of A & E who I can only say they saved the day and perhaps his life within twenty minutes he was admitted to SAU some six hours later who have since advised they were unaware he was awaiting admission. It is clear he was forgotten about and the outcome today may have been quite a bit different had I not made that call.

Whilst our A&E at the Lister is exceptionally busy at the moment - indeed often both it and the hospital itself is busier than at the height of the winter last year - this should not be seen as an excuse.

We're really sorry for what happened, but if the nurse you spoke with has not done so already at your request, we would like this matter followed up so we can understand what occurred and why - plus, crucially, any actions that may need to be taken to prevent such a situation taking place again.

If you are happy to help us in this way, please email us at generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net so we can get the ball rolling for you both.
