Yesterday I attended QVH with my father, who has severe dementia. I was overwhelmed by the support, help and consideration shown to both of us by the staff in ALL departments. The ward staff were cheerful, sympathetic and interested. The consultant had time for a smile and a chat and the anesthetist showed understanding at the same time as attending to a skilled and complex task.

it seemed we were also spared a thought by the women of the East Grinstead "knitting and natter" group who had donated a fiddle muff which my dad had with him and used on and off all day. Thank you for that it was really appreciated.

I have worked for the nhs myself so am familiar with the frustrations and difficulties in working for the organisation. What impressed me the most was the "joined up feel" between all departments and the sense that the staff believed and embraced the protocol. They weren't just doing their job, they took pride in it. Thank you everyone involved.

Thank you very much for sharing your fathers recent experience at QVH with us.

At QVH we have developed a dementia strategy to ensure that people with dementia or memory loss are cared for with dignity and compassion and are given any extra support they need. The strategy focuses on education and training; individualised care and support; communication and information; and the environment, along with an overarching recognition of the importance of the role of the carer.

The knitted ‘feely’ muffs are for patients with dementia which have been known to help reduce anxiety. Having made an appeal to staff and local knitting groups for their help, we had a fantastic response! We are so pleased to hear that you father found his beneficial during his stay with us.

We continue to review and improve our service for people with dementia and are extremely appreciative of your feedback and wish your father all the best with his recovery.
