"More support needed for miscarraige patients"

I went to see the midwife on the day of my appointment where I started to bleed. My midwife rang some wards at the Royal Bolton Hospital and they said there was nothing available till Monday. The midwife then arranged blood tests but by this time I was bleeding more and a doctor wished to see me. The doctor then managed to get me an appointment to go straight in. I stayed in hospital for 3 days where I did not find the staff very pleasant. I felt they could have been a bit more bothered about the younger patients. I saw them mainly sat on the chairs at the top of the ward having a laugh and a joke. There were some times in the day where I had to walk up to them and ask for my medication or pain killers. The worst bit for me was being there for a three day stay. I was really wound up at one point where I got upset when a doctor told me I was miscarrying and a nurse said to me not to be so soft and stop crying, that it happens all the time. My dad wasn’t even allowed to be there with me when I was getting told. There was only one time I can say I probably smiled and that would be when me and the rest of the women in the ward had ordered the same meal and we all hated it and were thinking what it compared to. If anything should change I would say the staffs attitude to people that were suffering from miscarriage and ectopic pregnancies, taking more time to be supportive, especially when people like me have had more than one miscarriage and be more polite with the visitors.

Firstly may I would like to say how sorry I am that you were unhappy with the care you received at the Royal Bolton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. I fully appreciate what an anxious and difficult time this must have been for you.

I want to assure you that we treat any bleeding in pregnancy seriously especially when this results in a woman miscarrying her baby. We acknowledge what a difficult time this is for women and their families and strive to ensure that women feel supported and well informed and are treated with kindness during such a sensitive event. I am very sorry that this was not your experience.

I have noted your comments and will discuss all your issues with the ward staff. In particular I will pay attention to the way you felt you were spoken to and the fact that your dad was not allowed to be with you when you were obviously distressed and in a vulnerable position. I appreciate that both of these points will have affected you at the time and we will seriously deal with the issues you have raised.

If you feel it would be useful I would like to offer you the opportunity to come and discuss your experience with the ward manager of our Early Pregnancy Unit. This ward was unfortunately unavailable when you were admitted, but this is the area where women like yourself are usually cared for. We could also provide written information about miscarriage if you have not already received it.

It may also be helpful to know that we may offer you an early scan appointment in your next pregnancy if that is what you would prefer.

Finally I would like to thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. We do strive to provide all women with a quality service and we can only do this with women’s valuable feedback as users of the service. Unfortunately, we cannot change your experience and I am sorry that the care you received has left such painful memories.
