"NHS has gone all Zen!"

About: Southport & Formby District General Hospital

Had a car accident hit from behind. Turned up at reception immediately after it with pain in neck shoulders etc. around 4pm Friday 13th November 2015 (very apt). Asked why I was attending by reception as you would expect but after giving basic details name address GP etc..I was immediately handed an insurance card & they garbled on about money back for the NHS for any treatment receive. I had no idea what they were going on about & they then started pointing at posters on the wall to get information about NHS being able to claim back money for my treatment to go back into NHS funds & I had a choice to do it or not. I took the card without fully understanding.

I had arrived in a lot of pain and still in a bit of shock. Was seen quite quickly & given painkillers straight away. The triage nurse on duty was just lovely, they couldnt have been nicer and very sympathetic.

Though had no x rays which I had expected, I was treated by an A & E doctor with alternative therapies. I found that quite strange but amazing. The doctor was lovely, made me feel confident that they would make me better.

The doctor did hands on manipulation as the doctor said they could see where the problem was around my shoulder and collar bone & went straight into where i was feeling the pain. The doctor manipulated the area between my shoulders a few times and warned me it would be painful to release a spasm there..it was scary but I had faith in them. The doctor followed this by acupuncture ..it hurt a lot as it emphasised the pain I was in on that shoulder but the doctor assured me that it was normal to be in pain there as that was the injury site. The doctor left me alone for a while but then came back & followed this with a deep aromatherapy oil massage...with a strange metal tool instrument & a finished with calming hot palms over the eyes move we do in yoga.

Never known this in the NHS I even wondered if I had walked into a Thai massage parlor by mistake but it's very refreshing, keep up the good work in that area NHS!

Am still in a lot of pain in more places now but I am hoping that by doing what he did, has saved me a whole load of pain and shortened the recovery period.

The doctor gave me loads of advice how to help my pain when I arrived home. I hope the NHS realise what a jewel they have in them.

I hope you will re think giving out NHS insurance claim information when patients arrive, usually in shock & pain. it seems very insensitive to hand this out at that stage. Maybe provide it at the end of the visit or post out.

But all in all a High 5 to the Zen Doctor! Thank you :)
