"Chemotherapy unit staff are brilliant."

About: Pilgrim Hospital

Visiting Pilgrim hospital with my partner to attend the chemotherapy unit I noticed that outside the main entrance you have to walk through groups of visitors, and patients in nightwear, smoking outside the doors. The smoke really gets to you if you don't smoke. I feel no one should smoke on hospital premises inside or outside. If they have to smoke then an area at the rear of the hospital, not outside the main entrance may be better. I do hope this problem can be addressed. Is it any wonder hospitals have infections when patients are allowed outside in all weathers in pyjamas and dressing gowns, some in wheelchairs, some connected to devices.

Dear Anon

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments regarding the occurrence of smoking at the main entrance to Pilgrim Hospital.

The Trust has a Smoking Policy. As part of this policy smokers visiting our hospitals are asked to use designated smoking areas to ensure a smoke-free environment for other patients, visitors and staff. The smoking areas are clearly signed, away from main entrances, but still easily accessible.

This is aimed at preventing people from smoking outside hospital entrances, which causes concern for other staff, patients and visitors.

We attempt to enforce this policy at every opportunity. Anyone seen smoking outside of the designated areas is likely to be asked to move to a designated area.

I am sorry for the experience you detailed but thank you for taking time to raise this with us. Your feedback is very helpful as it highlights the fact that enforcement of the policy is not as effective as it needs to be.

Your comments will be considered as part of any future review of the policy and its enforcement.

Thank you once again.
