In my opinion. The Oaklands operates a two tier system one for private patients and the other for NHS patients.

I am a NHS patient who has recently had surgery at Salford Royal Hospital which I can highly recommend, as the level of care and attention to patients is exceptional. The treatment I received at the Oaklands was in fact the opposite - atrocious.

I was a day patient having ankle surgery after my surgeon had completed his day clinic. I arrived on time at 5pm and was informed by the receptionist they had called me several times on the day to come in earlier. I hadn't received any calls or voice mail messages.

I was taken to a small reception area for day patients where the Physiotherapist advised me of my post operation treatment in front of the other patients in the reception area. During this information session we were interrupted several times by other members of staff,

I was taken to a cubicle to meet the anaesthist who then left before speaking to me, the nurse did the same. The pre op process was rushed and unorganised.

The surgeon came to see me prior to my operation for a couple of minutes they incorrectly advised I would be leaving the hospital the same evening without an airboot, which I knew was essential to my recovery from the ankle surgery. I was concerned and asked them to check my notes which they did and admitted I was just a name on his operation list and that they hadn't looked at my notes before speaking to me.

My operation took place at 740pm,

I later awoke in the recovery room around 9pm in immense pain + cold and shivery. I was given a blanket to keep warm, until I arrived back on the ward where it was taken away, when I protested I was advised by the nurse It was unnecessary.

On my arrival on the ward the emphasis was on how quickly they could discharge me, I live locally and would normally be happy to arrange transport home. However it was now after 10pm I couldn't manage the pain and was feeling the side effects of the anaesthetic, I asked to stay and with great reluctance I was allowed to stay overnight.

I put in a request for pain killers straight away and finally received tramadol at 12.45am which worked. At 7.30am the next morning I was given my discharge papers. Repeatedly I was asked how quickly my husband could pick me up.

At home the next day I tried to put my damaged ankle into the airboot I had been given to find it was too tight.

I rang the hospital four times for help, I was promised a call back it didn't happen. Eventually I managed to speak to a nurse on the ward who read my notes and admitted they hadn't been completed properly.

I explained to the nurse that without the airboot I couldn't walk, they then tried to fob me off by advising me to take the dressing off! After much persuasion I was finally allowed back to the hospital to have my wound re-dressed.
