"Head Injury A&E"

About: Northern General Hospital / Accident and emergency

After my mum collapsed and caught her face/head on the pet's cage this morning, the GP advised A&E so she could get checked out and make sure everything was okay.

We arrived at A&E around 10:30am to which we checked in and sat down. Around 20 minutes later, a triage nurse called us over. They asked my mum what the problem was but was very blunt and not empathetic in the slightest.

The triage nurse did routine observations but made very little chat. My mum looked very nervous and had a pain score of 6/10. Nurse said everything looked normal but wanted an ECG so to sit in the waiting room which we did.

About an hour and a half into waiting, she started to complain of a bad pain in her head/neck and so went to find the triage nurse to ask for pain relief. The nurse then replied well what do you want, my mum jus explained that she needed something to take the pain away. The nurse said, take a seat. Over 45 minutes passed and still no pain killers !

Luckily, we found some ibuprofen in my bag. We eventually got called into the minor injuries area. The staff in here definitely made up for the rest of the morning, they were all more than helpful and made my mum feel much more at ease !

Thanks :)

I am sorry to hear about your experience in A&E but pleased to hear that eventually your mum received a much better standard of service in the minor injuries area of the department which is more like the care we wish our patients to receive.

If you wish to report the poor experience in detail please could you contact our Patient Services Team on telephone number 0114 271 2400 or by emailing pst@sth.nhs.uk and the team will be happy to help. Thank you.
