"Caring and supportive mental health care"

About: South West London And St George's Mental Health NHS Trust / Adult mental health

(as the patient),

I've recently finished a course of CBT that has given me a key set of tools to deal with my anxiety long-term. I worked with an excellent therapist who was kind, supportive, non-judgemental. Working with her helped give me the confidence to tackle my anxiety and I am indebted to her for this. With the techniques I now have, I am confident that I can have a future without crippling anxiety. I really can't stress enough how much this service has changed my life.

The only fly in the ointment is that a friend is using Wandsworth IAPT services as well and she was told mid-course that the maximum number of sessions had been reduced and therefore she was near the end of her treatment. I needed a longer period of sessions to make the most of the learning opportunity and engrain the new techniques to help me with alternative reponses to anxieties - and I am concerned that future patients won't be able to do so.

Response from Jane Healey, Patient Experience Lead, Governance, South West London and St George's Mental Health Trust

Dear zebra,

my name is Jane and I am one of the Patient Experience Leads for the Trust. Many thanks for taking the time to share your experience of our services and I am so pleased to learn that it was a positive one. It's always a pleasure to hear such lovely feedback and for staff to know that they are appreciated so I will ensure your feedback is passed onto the service.

I will also pass on your concerns about the length of treatment that is being made avalable to your friend. I am not a clinician but I am aware that some courses of treatment may be shorter than others so this may apply in your friends case. I would advise your friend to speak to staff in IAPT who should be explain the situation more fully.

If your friend wishes to raise a complaint or concern about this she can do so by contacting the Trust PALS line on 0203 513 6150 or by emailing complaints@swlstg-tr.nhs.uk.

Once again, many thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and I would like to wish you well in your recovery journey.
