"Upset by staff comments after my operation"

I was admitted to York Teaching Hospital in July for an operation to correct a hernia procedure through my stomach. From the moment I entered I had to endure comments from some of the staff on Ward 27 because of my accent. None of the comments were very complimentary and referred to my lack of intelligence or' stupid ' if you prefer. I was also referred to as 'brains' by one member of the staff on Ward 27.

I was pretty 'wound up and apprehensive' over my pending operation yet I had to endure needless comments from certain sstaff who were supposed to be professional and caring.

After my operation I was transferred to Ward 16 to recuperate but the comments I suffered earlier did not stop. I overheard some members of the staff and one in refer to me as 'absolutely stupid'. These are not comments regardless of where I come from that a recovering patient should be subjected to.

After two days of these comments drifting in from the corridor of Ward 16 I was getting very wound up and I was also repeatedly served the wrong food which I mostly rejected as I was on a 'soft diet'.

On the morning of the third day in hospital I was visited by the surgeon and was recommended for release which was relayed to a member of the nursing staff. Unfortunately it took ages as members were very busy but I was invited to get dressed ready for home pending my release forms which I had to sign before I left. All the while I waited I had to listen to uncomplimentary comments drifting in from one particular person in the corridor as to how 'stupid ' I was and comments like 'absolutely stupid' my will cracked and I packed my things and left the ward.

While I waited outside the entrance for someone from home to pick me up I was approached by so called 'security staff' and asked to return to the Ward to await my release papers.

I felt humiliated and derided and I gave this person more ammunition to hurl more abuse at me when I returned to Ward 16. They was the reason that impelled me to bolt from the hospital in the first place.

Later I was visited by Mr Miller and was requested to stay to undergo a brain scan and other undignified tests before I could leave. I was under extreme pressure and did not get to leave until the next day.
