"Assistance with giving birth at home"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as the patient),

I went into labour at home when my waters broke. My husband called maternity but couldn't get through and was advised to call 999 for an ambulance as the baby was coming. The call handler reassured my husband and talked him through what was needed should the baby come before the paramedics arrived. Without this assistance we would have been lost. The paramedics arrived soon after just as baby's head was born. They helped to deliver the baby's body. Both paramedics were great and reassured us both. Our baby was healthy and there was no problems. They got us to hospital as soon as possible. We would like to thank everyone - call handler and paramedics for their help and reassurance on that night.

Dear Smudges

Congratulations and thank you so much for sharing your story.

I was delighted to hear that all went well with the delivery of your baby and was really pleased to read your feedback about all the ambulance staff that cared for you. Our Ambulance Control Centre staff are a vital part of our service. They ensure that our ambulances get to the right place quickly and safely as well as providing guidance, reassurance and vital instructions to our patients in what are sometimes difficult circumstances and are often the unsung heroes of the ambulance service.

I was also glad to read that the ambulance crew were able to assist with the delivery of your baby and then get you both to hospital safely.

I am guessing that you are really busy at the moment but I would really like to pass on your kind feedback to all of the staff involved and wondered if you would be able to provide me with some more details to help identify the staff? If you are able to do this, you can contact me on 0131 314 0003 or at martinesposito@nhs.net

Thank you again for sharing your story

Take care

Martin.
