"Nurse was unsympathetic"

About: Knowsley NHS Walk-in Centre, Huyton

(as the patient),

I went out one day about two weeks ago although I was not feeling very well. Whilst I was out I had a dizzy spell and although I had made an appointment to see my GP because of the dizziness I was persuaded by a friend to go to the Huyton walk-in-centre. My appointment with the GP was not for a couple of days and my friend was concerned at how I was feeling with the dizziness so we went to the walk in centre.

I asked the receptionist not to keep me waiting too long as I felt so really unwell. I was triaged initially and then seen by a nurse who said I was fine and that it was just a virus. At the time I was so sweaty and I felt as though the sweat was also causing me to smell – I just wanted to get home and wash and change my clothes even though I felt weak and light headed.

I asked if she could give me antibiotics but she insisted that it was a virus and could not give me antibiotics. She left me in a cubicle, I felt so cross that she was dismissing my symptoms as a virus I just walked out. I then collapsed outside where my friend thought I should be taken to the hospital but I just wanted to get a taxi and get home.

My GP made a home visit to see me as I was really not well enough to get to the surgery. In 55 years I have never had a home visit from the doctor, I have looked after myself and have worked hard for everything. I know my body and knew I was unwell, the nurse at the walk in centre should not have been so unsympathetic. My GP said I was very ill and needed help immediately. I’ve now been on antibiotics for a week and am feeling better.
