My father was under the urology when diagnosed with bladder cancer, and it seems to me once you have had all the help you can get and you start to display symptoms of the cancer spreading your basically left alone!
The consultant should have stepped up quicker to diagnose there was a deadly problem with my dad and he didn't, he played it down, we had to fight to get him admitted for some help with his symptoms which were shocking to care for, we had many telephone calls to the secretary, A&E visits, GP, Weston Park, ST LUKES HOSPIC, and everyone turned us away and said its down to the Urology department.
I called the 111 service and insisted they get him in to the H2 ward at the Hallamshire because he was so ill and on the doctors arrival he agreed.
He spent almost 2 months on that ward which the staff are not equipped to help a dying man and half of them had not listened to the hand over of what he was going through in the end the consultant had to apologise and admit he messed up giving him weeks to live!!! His treatment from some members of staff was shocking some had no patience even the palliative care team just couldn't be bothered, all they wanted to do is dose him up on drugs that were not appropriate, our only option at that point was to try and get him admitted to the Macmillan palliative care unit at the Northern general, or home to die because the staff were terrible.
First we was told if he was a inpatient he would get in quicker, then we were told if he was at home he would have got in quicker, but we had no help at home from the district side, finally we got him transferred and just in the nick of time. My dad spent 3 days in the Palliative care unit and we was so lucky, the staff there are true angels and so caring and helpful to dad and our needs on his last days. All NHS staff should have that same bedside manner. In one word the Urology department are Disgraceful!!!!! and should be ashamed of themselves
