I recently had surgery for a hysterectomy, on the day of my procedure I met the surgeon who was different to the person I had met at the out patient clinic. I had had an urgent referal as my CA125 was elevated. I had a 5 minute discussion with this Doctor before I went to theatre.
After surgery I was not seen by the Doctor who had performed my surgery.
It would have been good to have been able to ask the Doctor who had performed my surgery a few questions. Just being told my surgery went well by other Doctors wasn't enough information for me.
On discharge I was told I would receive histology results 2-3 weeks after discharge.
On week 3 I waited anxiously for the post to be delivered, week 3 went, no results, I contacted my Gp surgery and was told to get in touch with the Dr who performed my surgery.
On the beginning of week 4 I contacted the Doctors secretary who told me a letter had not been sent to me, instead a letter had been sent to my Gp.
A medical secretary told me my results were "ok". I was so upset at the lack of communication to me - the patient.
I am still waiting to see my gp the first appointment I could get is next week which will be more than 5 weeks after my surgery.
I am a nurse and perhaps seek more information, I want to know what has happened to my body. Also being a nurse working with palliative patients, this journey had an additional anxiety.
On a positive note the care I received was excellent, efficient and all the staff were very kind.
As part of a patients journey I think the after communication is so important in order to help give closure on the experience.
