"Major reconstruction DIEP - Breast Care Team"

About: Queen Victoria Hospital (East Grinstead)

I underwent major surgery at Queen Vic hospital last year (October 2014).

The surgery was for reconstruction as a resulto of Breast Ca.

I was looked after by the breast care team, who started their 'work' on me well before the operation. Initially I was given the chance to attend a 'show and tell' evening where I was able to meet ladies who'd undergone the same procedure as me. Just as importantly we were briefed very thoroughly on how the procedure works/what happens during the op/what I needed to bring into hospital and exactly what to expect. This was extremely useful and I knew what to expect and was prepared the day I went into hospital.

Everyone was so helpful, knowegable and genuine. From the surgeons PA to the superb theatre nurses and anetheatist. Every step of the way I knew what to expect, had thorough checks carried out on me every half hour following the op (very reassuring) and every follow up appointment I never had to wait - was always seen by a very nice/empathetic professional and the results are amazing. I can't thank the whole team enough, the breast care team who were always at the end of an email, the brilliant professional nursing team, the ward administrators (so helpful) and of course the wonderful surgeons.

I still return for follow up appts and have a couple of stages to go yet, but I'm amazed at the affect the outcome has had on me - apart from discomfort, anxiety and conerns about implants, I feel like a 'complete' person again. I was even able to wear a bikini on holiday again!

Whilst the ward was incredibly busy and everyone rushed off their feet, I felt like a really cared for person at all times.

Queen Victoria is definately a centre for excellence. Thank you.
