"Staff seem to work hard."

About: The James Cook University Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

Staff seem to work hard.

What could be improved

My sister was on ward 14 cancer ward. The first ocassion she was admitted with an infection and was isolated. The room was not cleaned before she was put in there. Myself, her husband and another sister actually cleaned the en-suite and furniture, I was on my hands and knees cleaning the floor It is okay to have handwashing facilities at the entrance, but general cleaning left a lot to be desired. Patient hygiene needs to be addressed. My sister was in several weeks and in that time had 2 baths and 1 bed bath, she was also left to soil herself, being too ill to get out of bed, as were other patients.

Anything else?

I do realise that staff are very busy, but surely someone somewhere needs to sit up and take notice.

Please accept our sincere apologies for what must have been a very distressing time for your sister, for you and your family. We are taking these issues very seriously and would like to investigate the issues you have raised.

Infection prevention and control has been addressed as a top priority within South Tees Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and this has led to significant reductions in hospital acquired infections year on year. Ward 14 is one of the top priority areas within the Trust for infection prevention and control and this includes the cleaning of rooms. Patient’s hygiene needs are also taken very seriously, not only for this reason, but because dignity is such a fundamental aspect of care.
