I was admitted to the Specialist Surgery Unit for planned jaw joint replacement. The expertise, care and kindness I received was superb. All the staff (porters, doctors, nurses, cleaners, caterers) were so kind and caring and cheerful, even when overstretched with many demands on their time.
Just one very slight matter I would like to draw to the attention of whoever might be able to change the system for future patients and that is the food menus (which was raised in an earlier review). Naturally my eating was extremely limited after my surgery, but I was given a menu which had nothing on it I could eat, apart from potatoes and ice cream! However, when my daughter visited the following day, she asked and I was given a different menu (Purée and Fork Mashable) which had a good choice of suitable dishes. Perhaps nurses could alert catering staff about patients who would need to be given this different menu?
Apart from that tiny issue, which was quickly sorted for me, I have nothing but praise for all staff involved, from my first outpatients appointment, the wonderfully helpful and reassuring pre-op nurse, the admissions staff, the anaesthestist who ensured post op pain was completely controlled (unlike when I had the other jaw replaced at a different hospital), which I feel made a big difference to how well I recovered, all the nurses who were so kind, skilful and caring, the happy cheerful cleaners, porters and catering staff and all the doctors who were so knowledgeable and helpful and most of all to my wonderful surgeon for their expertise and kindness.. When I needed to return to the hospital (because of a minor problem) they even came out of theatre (on a Sunday) to see me.
Everyone works so very hard and I cannot understand how an attempt is being made by the government to increase hours and/or reduce pay of medical staff - they deserve more pay for less hours in my opinion!
I'm so very grateful to have been lucky enough to have this surgery under the NHS at the John Radcliffe hospital and wish to express my very sincere thanks to everyone involved.
