What I liked

What could be improved

the nurses attitudes to dignity and care, and perhaps to try and think how they would like to be treated under similar circumstances.

Anything else?

My elderley father was admitted in March for investigations, at 85 his mobility waas very poor and he needed looking after. My dad was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer after a very distressing experience in the sigmoidoscopy clinic, He was returned to the ward covered in feaces smelling and crying in distress. nobody offered to clean him or his bed. My father was a very dignified private man and every strip of his dignity was taken away. When we arrived to visit we found him trying to clean himself with a napkin and water from his drinking jug, you can further imagine our horroe when we asked the nursing staff for help they told us they were having there break so he would have to wait. This left myself and my 77year old mam to sort him out which we did in the bathroom, however again my poor dad was horrified to have his wife and daughter clean him in this way. After all this we even had to beg for clean sheets for the bed. The final insult was a nurse came into my dads bed area and sprayed air freshner and announced that that was better.

We discharged my dad the same night and took him home where he could be cared for and loved in his final days, he died 3 weeks later clean warm dry and pain free.

The reason I have told you all this is because I am alarmed by the inconsistencies in care across the hospital. I myself was full full of praise for the leven unit and the exceptional care I recieved there, you may wish to check a early entry by me on this site.

please never let this happen again, remember we all get old and ill, but dignity and pride remain intact till the end

Response from University Hospital Of North Tees

We have done a considerable amount of hard work to improve the experience of our patients while on our wards so as director of nursing and patient safety I am disturbed and alarmed to read this tragic series of events. It sounds as though we have let you, your mother and your father down very badly. You don’t say which ward this was but I would like you contact me as soon as you can so I can find out why this happened and what we can do to prevent it happening again. Please contact our switchboard on 01642 617617 and ask to be put through to the director of nursing and patient safety’s office.
