"I was admitted through A&E ..."

About: University Hospital Of North Tees

(as the patient),

What I liked

I was admitted through A&E and was treated with dignity and respect. The junior doctor that i saw at least listened to what i had to say and after examination and tests i got a correct diagnosis. One doctor whom i saw when i was admitted in the early hours of 20th nov 08 was exceptional. The two staff who gave me an ultrasound during my stay were friendly and put me at ease. There were some dedicated nursing staff.

What could be improved

I was admitted on to two wards during my stay on several occasions between Nov 08 and Jan 09 and one doctors attitude was arrogant. I did complain at the time to a member of nursing staff.

No confidentiality had to repeat to each doctor when they came round the ward what i was in for and there was no privacy, i would have preferred to be asked if i would mind having a group of students round my bed at such a vulnerable time for me. All in ward could hear what other patients had to say. I felt humiliated and unable to express my concerns fully. Patients disorientated wandering around. One man was totally naked walking the corridor when i arrived. Uncleanliness urine samples left in the toilet.

There was a patient screaming out in pain for pain killers and she could not reach the buzzer, as it had woken me up i got out of bed and had to press the buzzer until a nurse eventually came who said that she was rushed of her feet. (that was true ) She could not give the patient any pain killers as there was no doctor about. This happened several times in the night. It disturbed myself and other patients in our room as we felt so sorry for this lady.

Anything else?

i am supposed to have an operation in the future but will not be choosing this hospital.

Dear Anonymous

We're pleased to hear you were happy with your experience in accident and emergency but we're sorry to hear about your stay on one of our wards.

Understandably you feel let down and this is a concern to us. We would be disappointed and surprised if you have had this experience recently because we have been working hard along with our staff to improve all aspects of medical and nursing care.

Without knowing the details it is difficult to try and look into your concerns. However we would encourage you to talk to us about it because this is not the standard of care we would want for any of our patients. If you wish to do please contact our patient advice and liaison service at PALS.NT@nth.nhs.uk or by phoning 01642 624719 or 0800 092 0084.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comment on NHS Choices.
