What I liked

-the nurses were friendly and chatty with my 6 yr old son, putting him (and myself) at ease

-the children's waiting room in A & E is lovely, beautifully decorated and well supplied with toys

-our follow up appointment was taken care of for us, as well as medication that we needed from the pharmacy

-my son has recovered nicely thanks to the care he received

What could be improved

-the bed sheets appeared used

-the staff did not always wear gloves when checking my son's injured, bleeding hand nor did I ever see anyone wash their hands/apply hand sanitizer

We’re glad you had a good experience with your son while in children’s accident and emergency at the University Hospital of Hartlepool and we’re also pleased your son has made a good recovery.

We’re surprised and disappointed if the sheets were not up to our usual standard. We will pass these comments on to the department and ensure this does not happen again.

Our staff clean their hands before and after touching a patient, though they often do this on their way into the department and this may not be visible or obvious to patients and relatives. We’d encourage patients and relatives to ask if the staff have cleaned their hands. We are as keen as you are to prevent the spread of infection and our staff will be more than happy to confirm they’ve cleaned their hands if asked.
