What I liked
Some of the staff were very pleasant and had a very caring manner. The other good this was that I was able to leave eventually.
What could be improved
... predominantly attitudes of staff, knowledge bases of staff, understanding of certain medical conditions, and obviously cleanliness of the hospital as otherwise I would not have developed a post operative abscess on my wound.
Anything else?
After having surgery as a day case. I ended up having to be admitted to the ward. On one occassion whilst I was experiencing severe pain and still wearing my theatre gown, the doctor came in with the nurse and he asked her if I had 'messed myself' She replied 'No that is iodine from theatre'. Whilst I was having severe muscle spasms in my back, one nurse told me 'to stop the nonsense and that it wasn't necessary' Did she think I would be doing it for fun? The wound became very swollen and painful and I developed a post operative infection which manifested as a huge abscess and was needless to say very painful. When I contacted the ward, I was told that as I had been discharged over a week, I would have to go to A&E (really caring attitude!) . I eventually left with antibiotics and was told that they would contact the surgeon to request that my outpatient appointment would be brought forward, which I had originally been given as July (nearly three months after the operation) Two days later, the abscess burst and I again reported to A&E who said it was a very big abscess. They took a swab and pressed the wound to further extract some of the contents of the abscess and another course of antibiotics to take. They requested that I return for a review in two days. I did this and was told the results of the swabs were not back. Over three weeks after the surgery now and the wound is still not healed, is weeping and is painful. There is hardness in the tissues around the wound and I am still waiting for the appointment to be brought forward. Most of the staff I came across were very pleasant. I did consider lodging a complaint when I originally saw the surgeon due to his tutting and sighing which I did not feel was appropriate and his manner was clearly that I was not worthy to be in the same room and was wasting his time. I decided against this as I did not want to prejudice my operation. From my experience, I certainly would not recommend anyone going to this hospital.
