"Coronary Care unit - Ward 22"

About: Bradford Royal Infirmary

I had minor surgery at Leeds following a heart attack.

The following day I was transferred to ward 22 and what a contrast!

Dirty window frames sealed with masking tape and decor which looked as though it had been painted last century.

I was transferred to the 'discharge ward after 2 days which was even worse. The views from the similarly taped up windows was a concrete rendered wall.

Facilities were at best, barely adequate. Two toilets and one shower shared between all patients. Mixed sex wards which proved uncomfortable for the ladies as there was little privacy for them. Food, with the exception of breakfast, was inedible!

Have you ever tried potato rock cakes in cold gelatinous 'gravy' accompanied by rock dumplings?

I sincerely hope I never have to visit B.R.I again!

The one positive highlight of my enforced stay was the dedication of the staff: always cheerful and helpful and for that I thank them.

During my stay in the 'discharge ward' we were given a 'flyer' concerning an 'Inspection which was to take place the following morning. i do remember two ladies looking in he door, looking at the view from the windows and laughing as they left!

Finally, please ask a certain member of your staff not to smother herself in cheap perfume. She may enjoy it but the patients do not.

Please accept my sincere apologies for this poor experience, it is not satisfactory. I have contacted the matron responsible for the unit and she would be happy to talk through your comments, if you wish to speak to her please contact the PALS department on 01274 364021, or email pals@bthft.nhs.uk and ask for Matron Crabtree.

I will ensure that your comments about the facilities and food are passed onto colleagues in the appropriate department.

Thank you for taking the time to feed back your experience, we do appreciate all feedback, even if it is not good. We do listen and use patient comments to improve our services.
