"Revision hip operation."

About: Lister Hospital

I had a revision hip operation after three cancellations, in August. The surgery was great but the aftercare awful. I am 80 years old living on my own and I was sent home at 5.30pm and just dropped off to fend for myself. I could not put my foot down for 8 weeks and had to phone the next day to hire a wheelchair. I had somecare for 5 days then it stopped and I have been relying on friends to get food in for me. I thought there would be better care but nobody seemed to be bothered to help me. I am through the worst now and have managed to get private care for light cleaning and shopping. I do feel there should be more help after the operation for older people.

We're sorry that you feel let dowm with the follow-up care you might expected to have following your hip operation. Although this aspect of your post-operative care is the responsibility of the likes of social services, our discharge team do have a role to play in ensuring that patients do have the help they need.

Often this is provided by family, but in many situations other care and social services may need to be put in place.

As it's not clear what should/could have happened in your case, would you mind emailing us at generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net so that our discharge team can check what happened.

Whilst we can't undo what's happened, there may be learning that we can gain from investigating your aftercare.

We hope that you give us that chance.
