"A very good experience on inguinal hernia repair."

About: Southampton NHS Treatment Centre

On the last Tuesday in September I had an operative appointment at RSH Hospital due to my inguinal hernia (just one side wrong).

I arrived in the afternoon at the reception, and after just few minutes of waiting, a member of staff took me to a room where I had to change my clothes and wait for operation. The staff asked me many times why are you here and on which side the hernia should be repaired, first I thought it is because they have so many different cases and they don't want to mistake you for someone else, but now I think it has maybe also a legal relevancy.

So I waited maybe one hour in this room, many people were coming in and out asking some questions and doing some examinations (i.e. they measured my blood pressure and pulse and when I couldn’t take off my jewellery because there is simply no fastener for this they found a good solution, so they were glad and I was happy also). After this approx. one hour or maybe some more a member of an anaesthetic team took me to the 'anaesthetic room'. The anaesthetic doctor put me at ease as they were asking me questions about football and things like that and the last thing that I remember is when they put a small mask on my face and I felt into sleep like a baby...

And then I woke up in a 'waking up area' and I didn't wake up alone there not knowing what's going on now, but someone friendly was with me again. After some time there they took me to the ward (as I was allowed to stay in the hospital overnight). I was pleased because even a surgeon who carried out this operation visited me on the ward telling me that I had a large inguinal hernia but they managed to fix it and asked me how I felt now etc. During the night, which I spent at the hospital I had a few minutes feeling dizzy but the staff there on the ward managed to solve this problem quickly and painlessly. In the morning on the next day I received some medication and dressing for the next days, an information leaflet (something like a list what to do and not for the next days) and left.

As a general comment I have to say that the hospital is clean, the food is tasty and every member of the staff which I met there is friendly, helpful and caring.

PS A few days ago I noticed some redness around my operated inguinal hernia. During an appointment at the hospital this redness was found to be normal and should gradually fade. Therefore I am optimistic that everything is going as planned and will heal with time.
