"Dentists availability in Skye"

About: NHS Highland (Health)

(as the patient),

We recently moved to Skye and went along to the brand new Dentist Clinic in Portree to register with a dentist.

We were told there is a waiting list of 500 people.

There are supposed to be 2 full-time and two part-time dentists, but there are only two in total, and one of them will not have their contract renewed.

The only possibility of registering with a dentist is to travel to Kyle of Lochalsh, a distance of 35 miles.

Dear Needssweeping

Welcome to the Highlands and the beautiful Island of Skye. Not withstanding your current difficulty with accessing a Portree dentist I do hope you are settling in. I am afraid there are no easy answers on this one and for the foreseeable future registering with a dentist in Kyle is the current best option.

For various unplanned reasons we are down dentists in Portree and despite taking steps we have not yet been able to address this and realistically this may take some time.

I appreciate this will not be the response you were hoping for but I feel sure you would prefer to have a straight answer.

Thank you for your reply. It is helpful in the short term, but not very hopeful.

I'd like to know whether the lack of dentists is a direct consequence of lack of NHS funds.
