On Wednesday 30 th. September I accompanied my husband to the hospital for a cataract removal. His notes indicated that he has vascular dementia. I am his wife and carer. I was told at his pre-assessment that it would be good for him to have a familiar face near him when he came out of the surgery. I was able to stay in the ward previous to his operation. Unfortunately he was the last one on the list so we waited for 1.30 to about 5.15 to have the operation. It was a confusing time for him so I was thankful that I was able to stay with him during that time. However, once he was taken to the theatre I was very rudely told to leave the ward and stay outside in the official waiting area by one of the nurses. I asked if I could be told when the op.was finished so that I could be with him. This , unfortunately, was not done . The nurse left for home . I saw them as they left so they knew I was still waiting. Unsure of where my husband was I went into the ward and found him wandering around trying to find the toilet. He was quite dazed and confused and I am upset that at the particular time that he needed me I was not there. I have no complaints whatsoever about the treatment he received before, during and after the operation by nurses and doctors but the dismissive way in which I was treated
I feel was unacceptable as my husbands needs were specific and under different circumstances I could have left him in the hospital and returned to pick him up when he was ready for dismissal as happened with other patients.
