"No one seemed to care"

About: Royal Cornhill Hospital

(as the patient),

I spent some time on Brodie Ward. Never had any one to one talks with any of the nurses. No one seemed to care or ask how you were. Staff indifference. No activities.

Even the student nurses didn't seem to bother or seem to care which I found sad.

When I was feeling agitated and paranoid I was just given medication rather than staff wanting to talk about it. No exploration or encouragement.

Not what I consider to be a therapeutic environment.

Only saw nurses at medication times, meal times or if they were doing the ward checks. A lot of bank staff doing obs.

Nurses mainly congregating in staff office mainly - surely they can't be doing paperwork the whole of their shift? Scared to ask for help or for anything.

Dear patient

This is a disappointing picture of mental health services. I will invite the manager of the area to respond to your concern. It would be great if you felt able to get in touch with me directly. Knowing the dates of your admission would help us to look into your expoerience. You can be assured of confidentiality at all times.

I can be contacted on 01343 567900 or by email at loldroyd@nhs.net.

I hope you are feeling well at the moment and please give me call if you would like to talk over your experiences.

Kind regards

Dear patient

The manager of the service concerned has provided this response:

I am sorry that your experience on Brodie Ward did not meet your expectations and that you felt unable to raise your concerns during your stay in hospital.

I have passed the information you posted on to the Senior Charge Nurse in Brodie Ward as we welcome every opportunity to learn from the experience of all of the patients who use our service.

I am concerned to hear that you did not feel able to raise your concerns directly with the nurse in charge during your stay, however, I can assure you that we will investigate your complaint fully if you are able to provide us with details by contacting John Donaghey on 01224 557425 or by using the NHS Grampian Feedback Service.

Kind regards

Linda

Hi Linda and John,

Thank you for your response.

Having worked in the health and social care sector for over 15 years i know all about the trials, tribulations, dynamics, demands and problems etc of this area of work. However, i feel that in my personal experience confidentiality does not exist so i won't be disclosing my personal details. I do not wish to make a formal complaint as such but i just want to highlight and create awareness of some the issues i came across.

With the NMC revalidation process recently implemented maybe the so called reflective practitioners (nursing staff) should be refreshed in the therapuetic relationship and reflective practice processes and rights, relationships and recovery, CBT, basic fundamentals like care and compassion etc.

How would these nurses feel if they had to go into hospital when they are ill, scared and in a vulnerable state? Or any of their family or friends? How would you like to be treated?

If some nurses feel disillusioned/hardened or don't care about their jobs or their patients maybe they should reconsider their position.
