"Poor Discharge"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow)

I am totally disgusted in the way my brother in law was discharged today. Following a ORIF to a fractured ankle he was discharged with no prescribed analgesia, his discharge summary read like a fairy tale reason for admission incorrect, listing investigations and procedures that were not carried out on this admission but his previous admission and discharged before a bed could be available downstairs for him to sleep on as he is unable to walk or manage the stairs meaning he had to sleep on the sofa. When my sister went to the ward to complain and try to get his some analgesia she was told the on call team were not happy to do this or change the discharge summary as he was not their patient. I fully appreciate not changing the discharge summary but who would deny prescribing analgesia ? Where is the care, compassion and dignity in this suituation.

Dear Anonymous,

I am sorry your brother in law has had this experience. The error you described was not acceptable and to make it worse by not responding to a request for analgesia is not what we expect from any member of the PAH team.

We would be keen for you to get in touch with more information about what happened so we can better understand what went wrong. Please call 01279 827084 any time between 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday so we can take down the details of what occurred and better address the root cause.
