"young disabled man waiting over 2 hrs in minors..."

About: William Harvey Hospital (Ashford)

on the evening of the 24th September witnessed in minors, the mother of a young man with disabilities asked for help after waiting in excess of two hours as her son was getting distressed, in order to speak to staff the young man was left unattended, he subsequently collapsed. Any disabled person sensitive to noise and new experiences exhibiting distress should surely be seen without delay if at all possible, at the very least a side room should be sought in order to offer some respite from sensory overload which could potentially trigger further health deterioration. Staff equality awareness non existent . Staff responded to him on the floor as first contact.

We have been aware for some time that the facilities at WHH A&E are far from ideal.

As you rightly say, the patient you have highlighted would have been more comfortable in a quieter environment.

I am pleased to say that work has already started in reconfiguring the area to make the 'flow' much more sensible and sensitive to patient's needs.

In the meantime we apologise for the inevitable disturbance this will cause.
