"My Daughter Was Admitted with an Ovarian Cyst"

About: Royal Hampshire County Hospital

I am writing this review as I can't tell you how impressed I was with a gynaecology surgeon who operated on my 15 year old daughter last week.

They and the Senior Consultant that we saw were caring, took time to explain clearly what they intended to do and encouraged her to ask as many questions as she liked.

However I can't say the same for the A&E Dept; she was admitted around 1pm on Thursday, was kept in there until 9.30pm and inspite of being in terific pain, did not see a doctor until 2pm the next day.

She was writhing in pain and screaming out, but no-one came to her even though there was a nurse sitting right outside her cubicle staring at a computer screen.

I had to ask twice before they eventually brought her pain relief.

The nurses didn't seem at all interested; in fact they made no eye contact and seemed far too important to do something as menial as care for their patients.

On top of this my daughter's treatment was delayed because a Bed Manager refused to allow her on to the gynaecology ward because she was only 15.

The surgeon later told us they were furious as this delayed her seeing a doctor and receiving appropriate treatment until the following day.

It was a horrible experience.

However, once she did see the doctor, it all went smoothly and for that I am very thankful.

Thank you for your feedback regarding our emergency and gynaecology departments. I am sorry that your attendance at the emergency department did not meet the high standards we aim to provide, but I am pleased that your daughter received better care and treatment from the gynaecology team.

I have shared these comments with the clinical leaders, however, if you wish to discuss your experience further please contact our customer care team on 01256 486766 or email customercare@hhft.nhs.uk who can assist you.
