"X-ray and Plaster"

About: Gravesham Community Hospital

On Thursday 17th Sept my daughter had an accident at school, I took her to the A & E where i sat for nearly 2 hours, at 4pm I was about to ask how much longer they were going to be as I noticed the x-ray department closed at 4:45 which for a A & E is pretty stupid...then when she had finally been x-ray'd and a fracture found we were taken to the plaster room only to hear the 2 nurses whinging they now had to do overtime to plaster my daughter up.

On Tuesday 22nd I had to return to the A & E as my daughter was in pain and had been complaining all weekend so I decided to have it checked to make sure all was ok, the nurse on duty was a bit dismayed as it seems the 2 nurses that plastered my daughter up had rushed what they were doing and set her foot in the wrong position causing her the pain she was in, they then had to reset her foot in the correct position and re-plaster her.

Dear Matt

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your recent visits to Gravesham Community Hospital with your daughter and we are very sorry that your experience was not a positive one.

As a result of your review we asked the service lead there to investigate your comments.

She was on leave at the time of your visits but has spoken to the staff on duty.

1. Our x-ray opening times are governed by the acute trust and are open until 5pm Monday to Friday. We are a Minor Injuries Unit and not an Urgent Care Centre. Apparently on this occasion there were several patients that unfortunately had to return the following day for x-ray.

2. One member of staff had stayed on after her shift had finished as the department had been dealing with a seriously ill patient. At no time was it felt she ‘whinged’ about this so please accept our apologies if this was the impression you were given.

3. There is no documentation to support your account that the plaster had been applied in the wrong position. Our patients are always asked to return to the Unit if any problems are experienced and it is documented that when your daughter elevated her leg (as advised) and took pain relief that is was comfortable.

We hope this information helps to answer some of the points you have raised and apologies again that you were not happy with the care provided.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require any further information or wish to speak to the service lead.

Best wishes
