About: Manchester Royal Eye Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

What could be improved

I visited Manchester eye hospital yesterday and was appalled at the level of communication and poor level of staff available to treat the waiting patients. I was informed after my initial triage with the nurse that I would wait up to 1 hour. I waited a total of 5 hours and the nurse only infomed me of delays when I actually asked her! I had 3 hungry children at home who were worried about my welfare and when I was coming home and I dare not leave the waiting area in case I missed my call! The department was dirty and when the doctor did see me he used a gel handwash, shook my hand then examined my eyes! Cross infection control control NOT!! After my 5 hour wait, he then ASKED me if he should place drops in both of my eyes. I told him that as he was the doctor that maybe he should decide!! The nurses were polite when everyone was asking where they were on the list but if they communicated effectively beforehand then the patients, like myself, could have made alternative arrangements. At one point one of the 2 doctors on duty was called to an emergency. Fully understand but why oh why did someone not explain that there would be a further wait!! HELLO?? I think that 2 doctors for the amount of patients waiting is a rediculous ratio and more care should be taken to revise the methods used to treat human beings.
