"Waste of resources"

About: Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

I was unfortunate to have an sudden severe rectal bleed while on holiday in Northumberland last week are we were advised to go to Hexham hospital by a local resident in the village we stayed at.

We arrived at Hexham( a very impressive unit) and after a short wait to see a Dr who examined me and then contacted your hospital we were told that we would have to be transferred as they could not treat me there. After a considerable wait for transport I was transferred by an emergency ambulance with my wife following on by car.It took my wife a considerable amount of time to find Cramlington as for someone from outside the area signage seemed to be in short supply.

It would have been a better use if a non emergency vehicle had been used as I was embarrassed to think I was taking up a very valuable resource for considerable time.

It was a pity that I could not have been treated at Hexham as this seems to be a waste of a very well equipped hospital + the inconvenience of moving people around over a large area and the resultant waste of resources.

The care I received was excellent although I would preferred not to have spent 2 days of my holidays In your hospitals.

Dear Sir,

I am very sorry that you had to spend any of your time in our hospitals during your holidays.

I am sure not what you planned at all as you set off for Northumberland.

Thanks for your comments and for finding the time to share them - we really are very grateful for all feedback because we know how important it is in helping us improve care. I will make sure your review is shared widely.

Delighted your care was excellent overall - the decision taken to centralise care in one place is precisely because we want to keep it this way and ensure we have enough consultant staff in one place to respond quickly to serious emergencies and save lives.

with all best wishes, Annie
